Maalik Murphy, quarterback for Texas, will enter the transfer portal.

Arch Manning will be Quinn Ewers’ backup in the Sugar Bowl.

While the Texas Longhorns prepare to face the Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoffs, one of its quarterbacks will not be there.

Maalik Murphy told ESPN Wednesday night that he will use the transfer portal.

“I hate it, I hate it,” Murphy said of missing out on the College Football Playoff. “I have a lot invested in this team. Everything we’ve done along the way, as well as all of the work we’ve done together. It’s difficult to walk away at this point in the season.”

Because Murphy will not be available for the College Football Playoff, true freshman Arch Manning will fill in for Quinn Ewers. That is obviously significant because Manning now has a chance to start for the Longhorns if something happens to Ewers, which may convince him to stay.

When Evers was injured, Murphy, a redshirt freshman, started two games for the Longhorns this season. He guided Texas to two victories, a 35-6 triumph over BYU Cougars and a 33-30 overtime win over Kansas State Wildcats. He finished 34-for-62 for 418 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

He will be one of the most desired players on the transfer market. Many clubs, like the Syracuse Orange, Louisville Cardinals, Florida State Seminoles, Duke Blue Devils, and others, are still seeking for a quarterback. Murphy was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class. He was born in Gardena, California.
