Max Scherzer underwent back surgery and will miss the start of the World Series champion Rangers’ 2024 season.

Max Scherzer of the Texas Rangers underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his lower back and will miss the majority of next season.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner, 39, had surgery Thursday after injections and other less invasive therapies failed to cure his agony.

He is owed $43.3 million in the final season of a three-year, $130 million contract with the New York Mets.

Scherzer, who was taken from the roster during the World Series because to back discomfort, had surgery Thursday, according to general manager Chris Young, after injections and other less-invasive therapies failed to cure the problem. Young believes the three-time Cy Young Award winner will be fully healed and recovered by June or July.

Scherzer stated in a statement posted by the organization on Friday that his back condition worsened after returning to his winter home in Florida, and he was diagnosed with a herniated disk.

“After several conservative treatments and consulting with multiple specialists, I made the decision to have the recommended surgery,” Scherzer stated in a statement. “Having this procedure completed now will provide me with the best opportunity to pitch as much as possible for the Rangers in 2024.” I’m looking forward to putting in the recovery time and returning to the mound next summer.”

A left oblique ailment limited Scherzer to 23 starts in 2022, and neck spasms and a right teres muscle sprain limited him to 27 this year.

He was removed from Game 3 of the World Series after three innings. He was set to start a potential Game 7, but was taken off the roster before Game 4 in Arizona, the night before the Rangers claimed their first World Series triumph by winning Game 5.

Scherzer, who was acquired from the Mets via trade deadline on July 30, pulled a muscle in his right shoulder on Sept. 12 and returned to make two starts in the AL Championship Series against Houston, going 0-1 with a 9.45 ERA. Scherzer took the loss in Game 3 after allowing five runs in four innings, and then gave up two runs in two and a third innings in Game 7.

“Obviously not the best news, but nonetheless, we’re glad that we have a diagnosis and a solution,” Mr. Young added. “Max is recovering and feeling better already and we look forward to getting him healthy and back out there next summer.”
