Browns WR Elijah Moore should retire after scary head injury vs Jets, claims Dr Bennet Omalu – the doctor who ‘discovered’ CTE in NFL players
Browns wide receiver Elijah Moore should retire after suffering a horrific head injury that caused him to convulse on the field.
Dr. Bennet Omalu, the pathologist who is credited with identifying Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy among former NFL players, believes so.
Moore was released from the hospital on Friday after twitching involuntarily on the ground and being ruled out of Thursday night’s triumph over the Jets due to concussion.
Moore looked to hit the ground face down after being tackled by CJ Mosely, and as cameras filmed him lying on his back, his arms and hands appeared to jolt up into the air in a frightening manner.
Omalu, the inspiration for Will Smith’s film ‘Concussion,’ told TMZ that he would advise the Browns wide receiver to retire.
‘That is my recommendation,’ he said. ‘He was having a seizure… a seizure is a manifestation of brain damage, brain injury… that is permanent damage.’ Moore has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol, and Omalu believes he should miss the rest of the season if he does not retire.
The Browns are set for a Super Bowl run, but the doctor says Moore should be sidelined for at least three months.
‘Based on what I saw in that video, he should sit out the rest of the season,’ Omalu stated. ‘At least for three months.’
The Browns’ 37-20 victory on Thursday, led by quarterback Joe Flacco, secured their position in the playoffs.
Moore had earlier in the night caught an eight-yard touchdown pass. This season, he has 59 receptions for 640 yards and two touchdowns.
The club has 10 days until its final regular-season game, which will be played on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals. The playoffs’ Wild Card round begins on January 13.
