Jurgen Klopp hits back at journalist over VAR question

VAR-assisted refereeing decisions have dominated headlines since its debut to football at the close of the 2010s, and there have been numerous disputes this season.

The Reds were particularly irritated when, in September, a communication gaffe resulted in a goal in their final 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur being incorrectly ruled out for offside.

More recently, Liverpool were denied a penalty in their 1-1 draw at home to title rivals Arsenal after the ball clearly touched Martin Odegaard’s arm in the 18-yard box, and they had a goal disallowed in their 2-0 win at Burnley due to a minor foul by Darwin Nunez.

Klopp was asked whether VAR should still be used in English football at a press conference before of Monday’s visit by Newcastle United, but he was not amused.

“I really don’t think that I should answer this question,” he said. “You know, it’s not that you take advantage of me. I give you too often the opportunity to use my terms, and then it’s intended to put the things we discussed is not interesting anymore. It’s just ‘what Klopp said,’ and it’s ineffective. That is something I am unable to do.
