Washington running back Dillon Johnson hopes to play against Michigan.

One of the biggest unknowns for No. 2 Washington as it prepares to face No. 1 Michigan in the College Football National Championship in 2024 is whether running back Dillon Johnson will play after suffering a knee injury and exacerbating an existing foot issue against Texas in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.

Yes, it appears that the answer is yes.

While Johnson said he won’t be 100%, he declared on Saturday that he’ll be “ready to rock and roll,” according to ESPN.

According to The Seattle Times, Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb voiced optimism Saturday that Johnson may still be effective despite not being at full strength.

“I think he’s [Johnson] had a fantastic week of rehab.” He can now begin repping with us. “I believe he’s feeling a lot better,” Grubb added. “I know he’s a really determined young man, so I would be shocked if he wasn’t able to come out there and make an impact in the game.”

Johnson has 1,162 running yards and 16 rushing touchdowns on 5.2 yards per carry in his debut season at Washington after spending the previous three at Mississippi State. Before leaving the game in the closing minute of the fourth quarter, he had two running touchdowns against Texas.

This season, Johnson has handled the responsibility in the backfield for Washington, as Will Nixon’s 194 rushing yards rank second on the squad.

Overall, Johnson is a member of the Huskies’ high-octane offense, which is averaging 473.6 total yards and 37.6 points per game. Washington scored 37 points against a Texas defense that led the Big 12 in opponent yards (321.7) and points per game (17.5). It will now play a Michigan defense that allows only 9.5 points (first in the Big Ten) and 87.1 running yards (second).

The 2024 College Football National Championship will begin Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
