3 Commanders Coaching Candidates With Ties to Adam Peters

Washington Commanders set to hire Adam Peters as general manager - The Washington Post

The Washington Commanders have begun their hunt for a head coach after appointing Adam Peters as the franchise’s next general manager. Peters will be in charge of selecting Ron Rivera’s replacement, a significant decision as he begins his term in the nation’s capital. Here are three prospective candidates with ties to Peters.

Choosing the hot offensive coordinator to be your next coach does not typically work out, but Slowik has been extremely effective not only with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, but also with young receivers Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Perhaps Slowik needs another year or two of experience as an OC, but the Commanders have already requested an interview with him, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

LaFleur’s involvement in the failed development of former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson definitely disadvantages him in this discussion, especially given that the Commanders are expected to take a quarterback with the second overall choice in 2024. At the same time, the 2021 New York Jets had arguably the worst squad in the NFL, and it appears that Wilson was doomed to be a bust wherever he went. It’s revealing that LaFleur was instantly hired as the Rams offensive coordinator by Sean McVay, and with ties to him, Kyle Shanahan, and, of course, his elder brother Matt, it only seems a matter of time before the 36-year-old becomes a coach himself.

The Arizona Cardinals appeared to set Wilks up for failure in his debut season as a coach, firing him after a barren roster went 3-13 in 2018. However, he led the Carolina Panthers to a 6-6 record as interim coach in 2022, which is noteworthy given that they were 1-4 prior to Matt Rhule’s firing. There was a learning curve when he replaced DeMeco Ryans as defensive coordinator in San Francisco this season, but the 54-year-old clearly deserves another chance to coach in the NFL.
