Ex-Leeds United and Norwich City star Robert Snodgrass pens emotional retirement message

Former Leeds United winger Robert Snodgrass announced his retirement after a 20-year playing career. The 36-year-old began his career at Livingston before moving on to the Whites, Norwich City, Hull City, West Ham United, Aston Villa, West Brom, and Luton Town.

Snodgrass spent four years at Elland Road, making over 150 appearances for United before joining Norwich in July 2012. In an emotional Instagram message, the 36-year-old thanked everyone who helped make his career a success.

The Scotland international stated: “After 20 years of playing professional football, I have officially retired and decided to hang up my boots.”

“For 20 years, a small guy from Glasgow’s east end got to live his childhood dream by playing at ten wonderful clubs, meeting incredible people, and developing relationships with staff and people in the surrounding communities. Getting to represent my nation, playing over 600 games, scoring over 100 goals and 100 assists is something I never anticipated happening, let alone being told in 2014 that I might never play football again due to a career-ending knee injury. I’m grateful for the opportunity to return and play another 250+ games.

“I’d like to thank my family, friends, and agents for their unwavering support and presence. I wouldn’t have played for as long if I hadn’t had your backing. Thank you, my teammates and coaches.

“Finally, I’d like to express my gratitude to the fans who have pushed me forward and supported me through both good and difficult times.

“I’ve always tried to play for the badge and what it means to the fans, as well as your football club’s history and traditions. Knowing the money you paid to come watch, the least you deserved was a minimum of hard work, and I hope I demonstrated that to you.

“I will miss this beautiful game but from the last six months, it’s time to give my knowledge and help to the next generation.”
