‘Terrific player’… Leeds United now want to sign defender who has a really ‘good understanding’ with Joe Rodon
Leeds already has three Wales internationals on their roster this season, but have been linked with signing many more in January.
Leeds targets this month include Neco Williams, Connor Roberts, Kieffer Moore, David Brooks, Chris Mepham, and, most recently, Ben Davies. They’re all full Wales stars.
Davies of Tottenham Hotspur is perhaps the greatest surprise on the list, having played consistently at centre-back under Ange Postecoglou this season.
However, Leeds are keeping a careful eye on his status unless something changes, as Davies is a personal friend of Joe Rodon, who is now on loan from Spurs.
Speaking to Wales Online in November, the 30-year-old expressed his delight at Rodon’s success at Elland Road, adding that the two have a ‘wonderful understanding’ on the pitch.
He said, “It’s difficult. People sometimes underestimate how difficult it is to travel somewhere and then have to relocate every nine months. But I believe he has found a home in Leeds.
Joe is a great player. Every time I play alongside him with Wales, he is really solid and good on the ball, and I believe we have a fantastic understanding. It makes me very delighted to watch him succeed at Leeds.
“Joe is one of my closest football friends, so we talk all the time. He is the type of guy that, when he feels valued and has a good run of games, is a very, really excellent defender, which I believe he is demonstrating right now.”
Davies is now out for Spurs with a hamstring injury, but he had played 90 minutes in each of the previous nine Premier League games prior to Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
However, if Leeds could bring him to Elland Road, it would be fantastic. Signing individuals who already have good relationships with other players on the team can only be beneficial.
The aforementioned Leeds target Roberts has previously spoken of his agreement with Rodon, so it will be intriguing to see whether any of them complete the transfer this month.
