Golden State Warriors honour late assistant coach Dejan Milojević in first game back
Emotions were high at the Chase Center on Wednesday night as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 134-112.
Last week, assistant coach Dejan Milojević died after a heart attack, causing the club to postpone a few games, according to Yahoo Sports.
To honor the late coach, the Warriors donned black shirts with the Serbian word “brate” emblazoned on them, which translates to “brother” in English.
The team has introduced a new jersey patch with Milojević’s initials inside a heart, which will be worn throughout the season.Emotions ran high at the Chase Center on Wednesday night, as the Golden State Warriors returned to the floor after a nine-day hiatus.
Steve Kerr, the Warriors’ coach, spoke to the audience at the Chase Center before the game. Instead of a moment of quiet, he requested a standing ovation for Milojević.
The Warriors honored their assistant coach by taking off their special Milojević jerseys and placing them on an empty chair on the bench.
This touching gesture made several Warriors players, including Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, noticeably emotional on the floor.
Despite a one-point lead, the Warriors pulled away in the third quarter and won by 22 points.
The Warriors return home on Friday, where they will begin a six-game homestand against the Dallas Mavericks.
