Browns Set to Hire Former Quarterback as New Offensive Coordinator

Following Alex Van Pelt’s departure from the Cleveland Browns’ coaching staff earlier this summer, head coach Kevin Stefanski began looking for a new offensive coordinator.

A number of individuals were brought in to interview for the position, and Stefanski appears to have found his man.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns will hire Ken Dorsey as their next offensive coordinator. If this name seems familiar to the Dawg Pound, it’s probably because Dorsey played two seasons as a quarterback in Cleveland from 2006 to 2008.

Dorsey has ascended up the coaching levels since retiring from playing. He gained to popularity through his work with the Carolina Panthers, which led to a position on the Buffalo Bills coaching staff in 2019. Dorsey was then moved to offensive coordinator in 2022, after Brian Daboll left for the New York Giants.

In Dorsey’s first year as head coach, Buffalo’s offense remained consistent, placing second in total yards and points.

Despite their great talent, the Bills failed this season, prompting Dorsey’s firing in November.

Dorsey’s fast ascent and fall may concern some when he relocates to Cleveland. However, Stefanski remains the clear leader, so the Browns’ team will not rely exclusively on Dorsey to succeed.

In fact, letting Stefanski to maintain play-calling authority is likely one of the primary reasons Dorsey was chosen over other contenders who would have preferred to run the offense their way. Dorsey’s experience with star quarterback Josh Allen might also be beneficial, as the Browns aim to enjoy their first full season with Deshaun Watson in 2024.
