First Call: Luke Getsy beats out Mike Sullivan for reopened Raiders job; Le’Veon Bell wants a comeback with Steelers

On Monday’s “First Call,” a Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach is passed over for another NFL job by a former WPIAL star. Le’Veon Bell is discussing a comeback. T.J. Watt is praised by his peers at the Pro Bowl, while both Robert Morris teams and one of the Penguins’ minor league affiliates had a successful weekend of hockey.

Mike Sullivan, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterbacks coach, was also passed up for the role of offensive coordinator by the Las Vegas Raiders on his second attempt.

After Kliff Kingsbury dropped out of consideration for the position to work for Washington, Sullivan was seen to be a viable candidate again. He had interviewed prior to Kingsbury’s original selection to take over

However, Steel Valley alum and former Pitt Panther quarterback Luke Getsy was hired instead, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. Getsy had previously served as the OC in Chicago.

Sullivan might return to the Steelers as part of Arthur Smith’s staff, either in his current position or in another capacity. But, according to Noah Strackbein of All Steelers, the organization is scheduled to meet with Los Angeles Chargers passing game specialist Tom Arth, Tennessee Titans quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Charles London, and New York Jets wide receivers coach Zach Azzani.

If one of those applicants is hired, Sullivan may be promoted, demoted, or let go outright.

Le’Veon Bell, the former Steelers running back, has said that he is planning a comeback.

In a Snapchat message, the former All-Pro claimed he will begin training for a comeback in March. And he only wants to return with one team.

“I am going to be honest with myself. I’m going to place my foot in the earth. Do I feel it? Am I hurt? Can I go out there and actually play again?” Bell stated in a Si.com transcript of the post. “If I make the decision to return to the NFL in April, mark my words: I will be better than I was before. I’ll only be returning for that one team. You all recognize who it is. I don’t have anything to say. “You all know who it is.”

The presumption is that Bell is discussing Pittsburgh. After all, he met with Mike Tomlin at the team’s headquarters prior to the Week 16 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Also, in July, Bell informed the Associated Press that he only wanted to return to play in Pittsburgh.
