Sandra Douglass Morgan recognized for leadership in Las Vegas and sports landscape
Sandra Douglass Morgan continues to set the standard for women in sports and in Las Vegas.
The Raiders president received a Leadership Award on Wednesday at the 5th annual Sports Power Brunch: Celebrating the Most Powerful Women in Sports, held at the ARIA Hotel.
“For me, this award is not just a reflection of my own personal journey, but a testament to the collective effort and resilience of the countless women who dared to dream, challenge the status quo,” she said in her speech to the crowd.
The event, established by LaTonya Story, is held every year during Super Bowl week, bringing together women from sports and entertainment while also helping the American Cancer Society in memory of Story’s son, who died of cancer in 2019.
Douglass Morgan was one of four awardees on the day, alongside USTA & US Open CEO Stacey Allaster (Trailblazer Award), NFL Agent Nicole Lynn (Dealmaker Award), and Las Vegas Aces President Nikki Fargas.
“This is an incredible event to see so many incredible women in different industries and different areas coming together to celebrate and really to expose the growth of women in leadership positions and in sports, which is definitely an industry that women have traditionally been overlooked,” Douglass Morgan said in an interview with Raiders.com. “To see this event become bigger and bigger every year is really inspiring.”
Along with being the first African American female president of an NFL franchise, Douglass Morgan was honored for acting as vice chair of the Las Vegas Super Bowl host committee, bringing her two decades of leadership expertise to one of the most significant events in her hometown’s history.
“I don’t really believe it’s fully hit me yet,” she remarked, smiling, “but it’s great. Growing up in this city has certainly meant a lot to me. The Raiders are now establishing roots, developing, and ensuring that people know they are the Las Vegas Raiders, which is a win-win situation.
The Super Bowl will be able to make a significant effect, whether through legacy contributions to NGOs or contracting opportunities for small businesses owned by women or minorities. The impact of the Super Bowl will be long-lasting, and as a Las Vegan, this is a really proud moment for me.”
Douglass Morgan believes it is critical to use these opportunities and platforms to inspire and motivate other women seeking to make their mark in the sports sector. The ceremony took place on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which gave the day even more significance.
