Former teammate discusses Patriots failing Mac Jones
Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers was teammates with New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones in 2021 and 2022, thus Meyers is well-versed in what went wrong for Jones during his second pro season.
Meyers is far from the first person to think that former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick failed Jones after the 2021 first-round draft pick earned a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie while playing under then-offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Following McDaniels’ departure, Jones struggled while working with assistants Matt Patricia and Joe Judge in 2022, and Belichick took the 25-year-old out of four games this season.
Jones allegedly “has a clean slate with” new head coach Jerod Mayo, although the Patriots are largely expected to seek pay for the quarterback’s services before or after this year’s draft.

Meyers went on to say that he wished the Patriots had done more to “help” Jones once McDaniels became the Raiders’ head coach in early 2022.
“Like talent, coaching, you name it,” Meyers explained. “Just putting him in a better position to win I think would’ve helped their program a lot.”
Mayo admitted last month that “there’s enough blame to go around” for Jones’ transition from being a playoff quarterback in January 2022 to someone who may soon be competing for a roster berth.
While Meyers and others are likely correct in their belief that Jones deserved more in recent years, it appears like the former Alabama Crimson Tide star and the Patriots should reach an agreement on a divorce sooner rather than later.
