Phillips and Fabiański ready for Super Bowl LVIII
All eyes will be on Las Vegas on Sunday night, when the San Francisco 49ers face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
Kansas City is chasing its third Super Bowl triumph in five years, while San Francisco is looking for its first since 1995.
A win for the Chiefs would establish them as the league’s newest dynasty, but the 49ers will be looking for vengeance this time. They led the Chiefs 20-10 entering the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV in 2020, only for Patrick Mahomes to lead Kansas City to a 31-20 win.
Łukasz Fabiański and Kalvin Phillips, in addition to focusing on football at West Ham United, have another love: American football, which they take the opportunity to keep up with.
While playing for Arsenal, Fabiański witnessed the New England Patriots’ preparations for their regular season game against the St. Louis Rams at Wembley Stadium in London.
Phillips, however, got his start in football at Leeds United, where the San Francisco 49ers now own the EFL Championship team. We caught up with them after training to get their predictions for the weekend matchup.
In 2012, there was a game at Wembley Stadium between the New England Patriots and the St. Louis Rams, and the Rams were training at Arsenal’s facilities, so I got to see everything up close. I opted to go to the actual game with a handful of friends, and it was a lot of fun. Since then, I’ve tried to keep up with what’s going on.
“One thing about it is that it’s incredibly entertaining to watch and is a rapid game. What distinguishes it is that you may see a high score after two or three quarters, but the game may still be changed by some good plays and runs.”
Favorite player: “It used to be Tom Brady or Rob Gronkowski, but I think they’ve both retired, so I will go with Patrick Mahomes.”
NFL team: “I would pick the New England Patriots. I used to watch the Ravens because of Ray Lewis.”
Super Bowl LVIII prediction: “I believe the Kansas City Chiefs are the team to beat. They appear to be the most popular, so I’ll go with them.
