4 Detroit Lions who are most likely to have their contracts restructured this spring.

The repair of the Detroit Lions’ balance sheet is an important aspect of general manager Brad Holmes’ rebuilding efforts. Their dead money issue has improved substantially over the last few years, and it currently stands at a pitiful (with pitiful being a good thing in this case) $1.43 million for 2024.

According to Over The Cap ($46.1 million) and Spotrac ($48.1 million), the Lions are now in the top ten in the NFL in terms of cap space for 2024. So they don’t necessarily need to do anything to increase their operating space this offseason, but as free agency approaches, more is typically considered as better.

There aren’t many obvious cuts or cap casualties on the Lions roster. However, looming contract extensions this offseason will likely change some 2024 cap numbers, and contract restructures may also be on the table. These are the most likely ways to add cap room.

On the restructure front, these four Lions’ contracts are most likely to be reworked this spring.

The Lions have appropriately made Fox one of the league’s highest-paid punters. In 2023, he had a little lower yardage per punt (46.4 yards; 41.7 net average), but this was in comparison to his previous three seasons. This season, his rate of punts downed inside the 20-yard line increased to 45.6% from 26.9% in 2022.

The years remaining on Fox’s deal (until 2026) make it possible for the Lions to restructure him this summer.
