Christian Booher: I admit that I have high hopes for JJ McCarthy, but I don’t think the Lions should make a move to acquire a quarterback. Furthermore, I don’t see Brad Holmes changing his tone after providing Jared Goff unwavering support for the past three seasons. McCarthy’s winning background appeals to me, and I feel his athleticism will make him a highly sought-after draft pick. He would fit into the Lions’ offensive plan, but I believe the franchise is already set at the position and should not make a move to acquire a quarterback when it has other needs to solve.
Vito Chirco: I passionately oppose this. McCarthy won a lot of games at Michigan, and he has an impressive win-loss record and a national championship to show for it. However, with McCarthy at quarterback, the Wolverines’ offense was run-heavy/run-first, so it never felt like he needed to make more than a handful of big throws every game. He clearly had a successful college experience, and I will present him with flowers for all that he accomplished at Michigan. However, that doesn’t mean I’d make a trade to move up for him in the April draft, especially given the Lions’ far larger needs (on both sides of the ball).
Booher: I feel there is a possibility that Goff will not be granted an extension, although the chances of this occurring are minimal. He has endeared himself to the fans of Detroit and played at a high level, so the Lions should avoid taking a chance on a young quarterback when they have the elements in place to make a Super Bowl run.
