Yes, it is absolutely possible that the Red Wings will add players during the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline rather than sell them. However, Steve Yzerman will most likely wait and see how the next 6-7 games go before making a final decision on deadline strategy – eight standings points in that span should be enough to justify buying, in my opinion.

When asked about his wishlist for the trade deadline, head coach Derek Lalonde had a specific job in mind.
“Probably another versatile forward,” Lalonde said in a guest appearance on 97.1 The Ticket. “Someone who can play both center and wing.” I admire the versatility of several of our forwards, including Joe Velenos, Andrew Copps, and Michael Rasmussen, who can play center and wing.”

Lalonde swiftly followed with a reminder to be patient with the process that has led to their success thus far, and that Yzerman would do what is best for the organization’s long-term goals.
Referring back to Lalonde’s words about wanting another flexible forward, a few names come to mind. Nick Bjugstad of the Arizona Coyotes and Nico Sturm of the San Jose Sharks fit the mold of a depth forward who can play both center and wing. Furthermore, both are signed through 2024-25, implying that they will be able to stay in Detroit after the season’s finale.

Jeff Carter is another guy worth considering. He’s a rental with a no-movement clause, but if the Pittsburgh Penguins fall out of contention, he might consider waiving it to join a playoff-bound team.

Aside from their adaptability, all three players have notable traits. Bjugstad is a big right winger who excels at penalty killing. Sturm has won 59.4% of his 466 faceoffs. Carter, another right-handed shot, has spent more time on the wing, but he has a 63.7 faceoff win percentage from 223 draws and two Stanley Cup rings.
The Red Wings need another depth center. If they want Joe Veleno to play on a higher-level wing, they will need a proven fourth-line anchor. Christian Fischer can.
