Patrick Kane scores in OT to give Red Wings victory over Avalanche

DETROIT (AP) — Patrick Kane scored at 3:42 in overtime to earn the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.

Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin passed to Kane, who sent a fast shot from the top of the hash marks past Avalanche goalkeeper Justus Annunen for his tenth goal of the season.

Nathan MacKinnon scored for the Avalanche. Larkin scored Detroit’s other goal.

The victory snapped the Red Wings’ 10-game losing streak against the Avalanche. Detroit hadn’t beaten Colorado in nearly eight years, and Colorado outscored Detroit 47-21 during that time. The Red Wings last defeated the Avalanche 5-3 in Detroit on February 27, 2016.

Annunen made 28 saves, while Detroit’s Alex Lyon stopped 30 shots.

Following a scoreless first period, MacKinnon gave Colorado the lead at 4:49 in the second. Mikko Rantanen feed MacKinnon as he approached the Detroit net, and the forward flicked a close-range shot over Lyon’s right shoulder for his 34th goal of the season. MacKinnon is second in the NHL scoring race, with 93 points.

Larkin knotted the score on the power play with 7:58 left in regulation. Larkin took a pass from David Perron and sent a high shot past Annunen on the stick side for his team-leading 25th goal of the season.

The Red Wings have won three straight games and are 4-0-1 in their last five home games. Colorado’s two-game winning streak ended. The Avalanche have a 1-4-1 record in their previous six away games.
The Avalanche return home to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
