West Ham striker Michail Antonio issues public apology to Liverpool after ‘deluded’ prediction that his side would finish above them this season.
West Ham striker Michail Antonio has apologised to Liverpool and its fans for making a ‘wild’ prediction earlier this season.
Antonio felt optimistic about his team’s chances ahead of their clash with the Reds at Anfield in September.
He predicted that his team will not only defeat Jurgen Klopp’s side on the day, but would also finish ahead of them in the Premier League standings.
‘I am backing myself over Liverpool,’ he stated on the Footballer’s Football Podcast at the time.
‘You know what? I believe we will finish higher than Liverpool this season. I am putting it out there.
‘I watched the Wolves vs Liverpool game because it was before ours, and Wolves could have easily won! They had several opportunities. We have them this weekend, and it is a six-pointer. We got them!
Antonio would live to rue his words, as Liverpool won the match 3-1 and went on to establish a strong title push.
‘Before we move further, I have something to say,’ he stated. “At the start of the season, I made a comment.
‘It was a little wild. It was quite wild. I suggested that West Ham could finish ahead of Liverpool this year. I won’t lie: I stated it was my chest.
‘They weren’t gelling together at all, and I thought we’d finish sixth or seventh. There were numerous statistics about Klopp having seven or eight years and then experiencing a dip; it was one of those things.
‘I was clearly deluded at the time. So I’m going to have to issue a public apology to Liverpool fans and players. I take it back.
