David Moyes weighs up West Ham future with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool decision in mind.

David Moyes has always been open about his contracts, but the Scot’s suggestion that he is the one holding up the deal proposed by West Ham’s board is a new twist.

Moyes has frequently stated that he is not in a haste to sign and continues to joke that the media spends more time thinking about his future than him.

Except for a shifting atmosphere among supporters and a disappointing start to 2024 in which they have yet to win, cries for change from the stands have grown.

It would be tempting to interpret Moyes’ remark that he is the one playing wait-and-see as laying the groundwork for him to depart rather than be forced out in May. He stated that there are “plenty of reasons” to wait, but it is possible that he is simply reassessing if it is time for a break.
Moyes, 60, became the Premier League’s oldest manager last week when Roy Hodgson left Crystal Palace. And, with Jurgen Klopp citing burnout as the reason for his departure from Liverpool, the West Ham manager’s statement that he will confer with his family before making a decision was remarkable.

“Management has always been demanding but there are different elements that have come into football more than in the past,” Moyes was quoted as saying. “I’ll decide when I’m ready, which will be when we’re all ready. You always know when you’ve reached the point where you need to change, but for now, let’s see.”

The work isn’t as simple as it previously was. Winning matches is only one aspect of a manager’s job, which also includes acting as a spokesperson, dealing with more sophisticated club structures in an era of celebrity recruitment heads, and worrying about balance sheets.

He went on to say, “Managers now have a lot more to think about than they did in the past.” A new generation is emerging, and they may have a different perspective on things.

“There is clearly a different level than in the past. For example, I am exposed to a lot more media than I was previously. There are many more games than before, and if you’re good enough, you can compete in them. There are several further consequences. Financial fair play is something managers should be aware of. “Many more items.”
