2 Championship players that Leicester City should sign for free this summer.
The Foxes are virtually certainly heading to the Premier League, but along the road, they could cherry-pick a couple of quality Championship stars on the cheap.
Even though nothing is fixed in stone with more than two months of the 2023-24 Championship season remaining, it would be surprising if Leicester City did not return to the Premier League by May.
The Foxes have been rampant for much of the current season, blowing away most sides they come across – with a few exceptions – and, while some home fans have not been completely happy with head coach Enzo Maresca’s style of play, it appears to be working.
Once City’s inevitable promotion is confirmed, the recruitment team can focus on adding new players to Maresca’s squad, and with Wilfred Ndidi, Dennis Praet, and Kelechi Iheanacho out of contract this summer, some significant changes are possible.
And if Leicester rises as projected, they may bring some quality Championship players with them on free transfers as they attempt to bargain hunt and cherry pick – let’s have a look at TWO second-tier stars who City could target.
O’Hare’s move over the M69 from Leicester’s fierce rivals Coventry City would be highly controversial, but it is not impossible to facilitate.
O’Hare has been a revelation for the Sky Blues since joining on loan from Aston Villa in 2019, and his League One performances throughout their promotion-winning season persuaded Mark Robins to buy the creative midfielder permanently.
While not a prolific goalscorer over the years, O’Hare is a very good dribbler and creator at Championship level, but the 2022-23 season was a complete disaster for him, as he suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the first few months of the season, and then a serious knee injury on Boxing Day 2022 that kept him out of action for nearly a year.
The 25-year-old has returned with a vengeance this season, having already surpassed his Championship seasonal goal tally in a less number of games, and he is already on Leicester’s radar.
The Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse reported in January that the Foxes, along with Burnley, Southampton, and unnamed La Liga clubs, were keeping an eye on O’Hare’s situation ahead of the summer, and with Mark Robins admitting that the playmaker is waiting to see if he receives Premier League offers, Leicester could strike in a few months.
There is a position for O’Hare in Maresca’s midfield, as the Italian normally plays two advanced midfielders front of the centre Harry Winks – Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is a lock for one of them, but with Ndidi’s future uncertain, Coventry’s prized asset would be an ideal pairing with KDH.
