Manchester United 1-2 Fulham: Iwobi steals three points for Cottagers with 97th minute strike.
After securing three points against Luton Town’s Kenilworth Road last weekend, Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United will be looking for another success when they host Fulham to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
MUN: Onana, Lindelöf, Maguire, Varane, Dalot; Casemiro, Mainoo; Garnacho, Fernandes, Forson; Rashford
FUL: Leno, Robinson, Bassey, Adarabioyo, Castagne; Lukić, Reed; Iwobi, Pereira, Wilson; and Muniz.
After Rasmus Højlund’s injury, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gave Omari Forson his first professional start to replace the vacancy in their attacking lineup.
Manchester United did not appear to offer a threat as they went through the gears, and they were punished for their inefficiency in front of goal after 65 minutes, when Calvin Bassey hammered home a loose ball following a corner to take the lead at Old Trafford.
However, the Red Devils fought back, seemingly salvaging an undeserved point in the final minute of regulation time when Harry Maguire picked up the pieces after Bernd Leno mishandled Bruno Fernandes’ curling effort.
The story would have one more twist in the 97th minute, when Alex Iwobi emerged on the scene to dance around Diogo Dalot before picking out the bottom-left corner, beating a static Andre Onana in the process.
Saturday’s win at Old Trafford is Fulham’s second since 1963, and it ends the Cottagers’ 11-game Premier League away winless streak. Manchester United’s setback came only days after new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe spoke of the club’s desire to ‘knock Manchester City and Liverpool off their perch.’
It is now critical that Erik ten Hag’s team establish form – and quickly. They head to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday for the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round, followed by a match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next Sunday. The Red Devils were defeated 0-3 at Old Trafford earlier this season.
