Landmark Jarrod Bowen hat-trick helps West Ham United overcome Brentford.
Jarrod Bowen scored his first Premier League hat-trick as West Ham United defeated Brentford 4-2 at the London Stadium.
The former Hull City winger hit twice within the first 10 minutes before Neal Maupay provided a quick response for the Bees, but the visitors’ sloppy defending continued to prove costly as Bowen became the first West Ham player to score a Premier League trifecta at the London Stadium.
An Emerson Palmieri strike was followed by a Yoane Wissa consolation to finish off a sensational six-goal London derby in which David Moyes’ side won their first Premier League game of 2024 and defeated Brentford in the top league for the first time.
Lucas Paqueta began a Premier League game for West Ham for the first time since his calf injury in December, while Keane Lewis-Potter, Maupay, and Mathias Jensen returned to the Bees’ starting lineup.
The Bees had won each of the previous five Premier League games between West Ham and Brentford, but owing to an incredible start that exceeded the Irons’ hopes, Moyes’ side made two major strides towards breaking that jinx.
Just one second after Tomas Soucek blazed a promising chance over the bar, Edson Alvarez robbed Frank Onyeka of the ball, sparking a quick West Ham onslaught that concluded with Bowen finding an opening at Mark Flekken’s near post with an outside-of-the-foot slice in the fifth minute.
Only two minutes after bringing the London Stadium crowd to its feet, Bowen was the beneficiary of more sloppy Bees play; after Zanka cheaply conceded possession, the Hammers worked the ball from left to right, and the Englishman arrived to fire in from Vladimir Coufal’s low ball into the box.
The hosts’ dreamland did not last long, as a stunned Brentford cut the lead in half with 13 minutes on the clock, when Lewis-Potter spotted a wonderful horizontal move from Maupay around the edge of the box and slipped in the Frenchman to find the roof of the goal.
Another defensive blunder was to blame for another early goal: Kurt Zouma gave the ball away and allowed acres of room.
