Newcastle United star’s ‘huge message’ ahead of England fixtures with Belgium and Brazil.

One Newcastle United player is expected to receive his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England side.

Anthony Gordon has’sent a huge message’ to England manager Gareth Southgate with his strong performances for Newcastle United.

That was the opinion of Newcastle icon Alan Shearer, who assessed the United forward’s prospects of making England’s squad for this summer’s Euro 2024 Finals. The former Everton player had a rough first six months at St James Park following his £40 million move to Tyneside last January.

However, Gordon has been the biggest positive of what has been a challenging season at St James Park, becoming a crucial member in Eddie Howe’s side after helping England win the European U21s Championship and winning player of the tournament.

Gordon, who scored in Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, now has ten goals and seven assists in 38 games across competitions. However, statistics only tell half of the tale of Gordon’s impact on the Magpies, as he has maintained the work ethic and energy that have been hallmarks of Howe’s tenure at St James Park.

Gordon’s progress has sparked speculation that he may receive his first senior call-up for England’s friendlies against Belgium and Brazil later this month, and former Three Lions captain Shearer believes the Magpies youngster has ‘a really strong opportunity’ of making his way into Southgate’s plans.

Speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast, he stated, “I believe he’s (Gordon) sending the right or a major message to Gareth Southgate. He’s been absolutely terrific in a challenging season; he’s the only guy who has stood out. He has goals due to his energy, ability to run with the ball, and finishing skills.

I think he has a decent chance of making the Euro 2024 squad. (Jarrod) Bowen is having a tremendous season, playing most of his games down the middle and scoring a lot of goals. But Gordon is giving himself a very good chance of getting in there.”
