The former Whites midfielder has failed to find form since arriving for the Hammers on loan from Manchester City.

Moyes is backing himself to get the ‘Leeds United version’ of Kalvin Phillips firing for the Hammers. England midfielder Phillips has endured a difficult start to his loan spell from Manchester City.

He was at fault for goals in his first two games before being sent off in his fourth, a 2-0 loss against Nottingham Forest. However, Moyes wants to see a return to the form that inspired Manchester City to spend £42 million to sign Phillips from Elland Road in 2022.

“He doesn’t need to improve, he just needed game time,” he added. “The send-off slowed him down just as he was getting going. Kalvin will continue to develop as he gains more game time, as evidenced by his current performance.

Phillips came in as a late substitution as West Ham lost 1-0 to Freiburg in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 match. The 28-year-old is expected to return to the starting lineup for Sunday’s visit of struggling Burnley. The Hammers’ next three games are at home, against the Clarets, Freiburg in the second leg, and Aston Villa.

“Our form in the main at home has been OK, so let’s see if we can keep it up until the end of the season,” he said. “If we want to compete in Europe, we must win our home games.
