It may be necessary for the Detroit Tigers to begin their search for a shortstop for their Triple-A club in Toledo.
Over the course of three days last week, the Mud Hens lost both their top shortstop (Ryan Kreidler) and their second choice (Eddys Leonard).
Kreidler was struck by a pitch on April 4 and sustained a fracture to his right finger, according to the minor league medical report that was made public on Tuesday. While swinging at a fastball on Sunday, Leonard strained his left oblique.
Their return date was not specified. According to the club, Kreidler was receiving additional medical assessment when Leonard was getting ready to go for rehab in Lakeland, Florida.
The minor-league medical report, which is available for reading here, includes the names of several additional players.
Gipson-Long had missed training since the spring due to a groyne strain, but it looked as though his recuperation was almost complete.
But on Sunday, following a three-inning appearance at Class A Lakeland, he complained of discomfort in his right forearm. He is still being assessed.
Although Leonard hasn’t been added to the minor-league injured list yet, that will probably happen before Tuesday night’s Mud Hens game in Toledo.
Buddy Kennedy is now the only healthy infielder on the Tigers 40-man roster and the most likely contender to get time at shortstop for Toledo.
