Notes: NFL players get 12 new helmets to choose from in 2024.
Having additional choices to keep athletes safe on the pitch is just as vital as having a sexier new jersey.
According to Judy Battista of NFL.com, there will be 12 new helmets available for NFL players to select from next season, eight of which will be position-specific. In tests, five of those new helmets performed better than any other helmet used by players in the league.
Vicis and Riddell are introducing two new alternatives for quarterbacks that are designed to shield players from contact and maybe reduce the risk of concussions. Nine players wore the first quarterback-specific helmet, which was just released last year.
Together, the NFL and NFL Players Association created a visual that illustrates which helmets are safe to wear and how successful they are in lab testing. Three separate charts are new this year: one for offensive linemen, one for defensive linemen, and one for quarterbacks. This is to ensure that players are as informed as possible on which charts to use depending on their position.
The NFL’s executive vice president of communications, public relations, and policy, Jeff Miller, stated, “Obviously we want to increase those numbers because these helmets perform so well in the lab testing.” “And since manufacturers are already producing a sufficient number of models, athletes should be able to select one they truly enjoy and that fits them well enough to wear it throughout the season. This off-season, coaches, athletic trainers, and players will place a lot of attention on getting them into some of the more recent, more effective helmets.
A few years ago, these helmets were regarded as among of the finest; yet, according to Battista, six of them are now banned this year, and five more have moved to not recommended. This shows how swiftly helmet safety technology is advancing.
