Jared Goff: Lions media ‘almost relish in negativity at times’.
For quarterback Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions, things are looking up. All he wants is for the reporters covering the squad to feel the same way.
After winning the NFC North with a 12-5 regular season record, winning their first (and second) playoff game since 1992, and narrowly missing out on winning the NFC Championship Game, the Lions are coming off of their finest season in decades. All indications suggest that Detroit will have a similar level of success in 2024, when the Lions are a hot selection to win the Super Bowl for the first time in team history.
Entering his fourth season with the Lions after being acquired from the Rams in exchange for Matthew Stafford, Goff has played a major role in the team’s transformation from a recurrent cellar-dweller to a Super Bowl contender. Despite witnessing the extent to which Lions supporters have embraced the team, he appears to believe that the local media is falling behind.
In an interview with Willbo’s Trading Cards podcast, which is hosted by Will McInerny and Robbie McInerny, Goff’s old Cal colleague, expressed his annoyance at what he saw as the Lions media’s “relish in negativity at times.”
Specifically, he responded to a question about a viral reaction to a reporter noting the caliber of players on the San Francisco 49ers versus the Lions.
“I need to get rid of this quickly because I plan to stay in Detroit for a long time,” Goff remarked. “However, I have a problem with our local media because sometimes, they seem to practically enjoy being negative. Perhaps that’s what attracts clicks and makes sales. However, they are no longer required to reside there. Hello everyone, we’ve achieved success and we have a good crew. We don’t have to write about how we’re always the underdog because we can rejoice in it and be content about it. No, now that we’ve won the division, teams will be vying for us. I guess I’m overanalyzing it since it’s a personal grievance of mine and the rival.
