The Trotters had smashed Oxford 5-0 in March and would have had real confidence of a result at Wembley.

Oxford ended up producing a superb performance with Josh Murphy scoring twice to secure promotion to League One.

Parkinson racked up 157 games in charge of Wanderers, managing them through one of the toughest periods in the club’s history.

Amid major financial woes, Parkinson attempted to keep Bolton in the Championship but ended up moving on in August 2019, months after relegation.Bolton will still have a place in Parkinson’s heart having spent three years at the club and their failure to win promotion means Wrexham will be heading to take on Wanderers next season.

A new challenge awaits for Tozer, at 34 years of age, but he has said of potentially returning to Wrexham at some stage and linking back up with Reynolds and McElhenney: “I have had a couple of really good chats with both of them. They have both took the time out to make the effort to speak to me which was nice.
