Seamus Coleman rules out new role at Everton after contract update at Goodison Park

Everton defender Seamus Coleman has ruled out taking on a player-coach role following the Toffees’ Premier League defeat to Arsenal.

The Irish international’s current deal at Goodison Park is set to expire at the end of June, but the Blues have confirmed that they have offered the veteran defender a one-year extension to his stay on Merseyside.

Some had suggested that the 35-year-old could take on a more behind-the-scenes role if he was to remain at Everton for an extra season, but Coleman has ruled out making a switch to the dugout this summer.

Speaking to Off The Ball (19 May) he said: “No, not a duel-role no. You’re either a player or you’re a coach and for me, I’ll be one or the other.

“I’m a player at the minute and when the time comes to be a coach I will be a coach but I’m not looking for a player-coach role.”

Will Seamus Coleman leave Everton and Goodison Park during the summer transfer window?

Sean Dyche has already suggested Coleman is keen to continue playing beyond the end of the season and the defender has admitted that he doesn’t yet feel like he is ready to hang up his boots.

He showed in the defeat at the Emirates on the final day of the Premier League season that he is still more than capable of playing at the highest level as he managed to keep Leandro Trossard quiet for most of the game.

While he is unlikely to play every week if he does agree a new contract extension with the Toffees, Coleman still has an important role to play both off and on the field as the club prepare for what will be another tough season.
