Only two of those were actually spent at Norwich, with loans occupying more the early stages of his spell, but he saw his game time increase in the latter stages of the 2023-24 campaign.
That coincided with a significant upturn in performances, as many fans implored sporting director Ben Knapper to extend the left-back’s contract.
Huckerby believes he had started to see the best of McCallum, and that any side that secures his services this summer will have done good business.
“I thought he did pretty well towards the end of his time at Norwich,” said the 48-year-old. “When he first arrived he was just a young lad and then he was in and out when they were in the Premier League.
“Then he had Giannoulis ahead of him, but I thought that when he played he held his own, and his release is probably more about him playing regular first-team football than not being wanted as such.
“He played as a full-back for Norwich but maybe he’s better suited to being a wing-back because he’s so good going forward. I am sure there will be plenty of other clubs looking for a real bargain on a free transfer.”
There could be an upside for Norwich, however, with Knapper beginning to clear the decks for a rebuild this summer by trimming his squad’s wage bill.
“I think Sam was on half-decent wages so they may be cutting down a little bit,” Huckerby continued, speaking to Coventry Live.
