The Everton midfielder has given a lengthy interview to Het Laatste Nieuws, where he talked about his preparation for Euro 2024.

Onana was on a two-week break and when asked if a short holiday is to mainly clear his head, he said: “I really try to do that. Personally, I think it’s important to let go of football for a while and think about something else. That’s good, because it’s been a long year. A difficult season, with highs and lows. Having a little time for myself and being able to take a breather was welcome.”

Sean Dyche’s side finished the season in 16th place and the Belgium international made 30 league appearances.

“I’m always ready for these kinds of big tournaments. These are the matches that every footballer wants to play,” Onana explained.

“There are players who have played 50 games this season, who have also played in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League. With Everton we didn’t have European football. That might be a small advantage for me.”

Onana’s deal lasts until 2027, but there’s been claims indicating he could leave Everton in the summer window. The player has said that he’s aiming to take advantage of the Euros to attract top clubs.

“That happens almost automatically. At previous tournaments you have seen that the players who did well make the step up to the top clubs. That’s something I strive for,” he added.

“I feel like presenting myself to the European top and showing what I have to offer. This European Championship is a stage.”
