Sam Allardyce says he would not include James Maddison in his final 26-man England squad for the Euros this summer.
The England boss will take a closer look at some players before making a decision to axe seven members from the final list, with a 26-man squad to be submitted to UEFA by June 7.
Southgate faces a difficult decision on who to leave out and several England stars, including Maddison, will be quite nervous about missing out on a ticket to Germany.
The 27-year-old has not been in the best of form lately, having struggled to have an impact on matches since returning from his injury layoff in February.
The attacking midfielder looks unlikely to be in the Three Lions’ starting lineup for this summer’s tournament, with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden ahead of him in the pecking order.
Allardyce calls for Maddison to be cut from England squad
Allardyce believes that the Spurs star has not even done enough to warrant a place in the final 26-man list.
The former England boss said on No Tippy Tappy Football: “Maddison is a no. Much better players already in the squad, and there’s a fitness problem with him.
“Gets injured far too much, last season, this season. You want players who are going to stay fit, I think that’s one of the reasons you look at.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I would be extremely surprised if Maddison is left out of the squad by Southgate. While one can argue that the 27-year-old does not deserve to be in the squad on form, he offers something that the other options in his position do not, which is why the England boss would be keen to have him on the bench.
