Ipswich Town loan man Brandon Williams will leave Manchester United at the end of his contract, the Red Devils have confirmed.

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna put his Manchester United connections to use last summer, bringing full-back Williams to Portman Road on loan from his former club.

Williams found regular game time in the early stages of his Town stint and even scored twice in three games. He looked to have locked down a place in McKenna’s side, but he fell in and out of the team as 2023 progressed.

Injury and unavailability then hit, and Williams ended up making no more appearances for Ipswich Town after the incident.

Now, having returned to Manchester United at the end of his loan, it has been confirmed that the full-back will be leaving the club for good. The Premier League giants confirmed Williams will not be offered renewed terms and will become a free agent when his deal expires later this month.

While the second half of Williams’ Ipswich Town loan wasn’t exactly fruitful, it would be interesting to see if McKenna and co believe he can have a place in their plans.

The club won’t have to be frugal after their promotion but making shrewd signings where possible will not be frowned upon, and a low risk, low cost move for the departing Manchester United man could be a worthwhile one.

He put in some impressive performances in the early stages of the campaign, so if they can keep him fit and available, he could yet maximise his obvious potential with the club.

Whether they’d want to go for him or a player who is available more often though, it remains to be seen. You would certainly understand if McKenna wanted someone who boasts a more reliable injury record.

With manager McKenna remaining onboard, the club will be determined to back their highly rated boss to give them the best chance of avoiding an immediate return to Championship football.

The Tractor Boys will know they’re facing a steep task. All three of last season’s promoted sides have returned to the Championship straight away, and Ipswich are making back-to-back steps up, so this is a really steep jump for them.

With McKenna at the helm and some smart signings though, there will be high hopes for their long-awaited Premier League return.
