The Miami Dolphins wrapped up their final day of mandatory minicamp on Thursday.
Despite contract extension talks, Hawaii’s Tua Tagovailoa was a full participant.
For the first time this summer, Tagovailoa met with the Miami media this week and touched on a number of topics.
From the quarterback’s offseason weight loss, to his ongoing negotiations with the Dolphins as both sides try to ink a new agreement.
The Ewa Beach native is currently in his fifth year option of his rookie contract which will roughly pay out to just over $23 million this coming season.
If a deal is not made the lefty would enter free agency next year, but, the even-keeled franchise QB is not stressing over the process.
“Am I concerned about it? I’m not concerned about it, but there’s a lot of discussions, you know, that we’ve had that,” Tagovailoa told reporters. “We are trying to move that thing into the right direction where we can both be happy.”
As expected, the former Saint Louis Crusader kept details of his talks close to the vest, but did acknowledge the ever fluctuating quarterback pay scal as he watches other QBs around the league sign lucrative deals.
“I’ll tell you one thing, the market is the market, if we didn’t have a market, then none of that would matter, it would just be an organizational thing,” Tagovailoa said. “You know, it didn’t matter if that guy got paid that because it’s up to the organization, so that’s what I would say, the market is the market.”
Although talks have lasted months, Tagovailoa is hopeful an agreement will be made before the start of next month’s training camp.
“I’m confident that a deal will get done, but then again, it’s not in my control.”
The Fins are scheduled to open training camp in late July.
