Sunderland transfer target Ian Poveda is reportedly “in discussions” with a Championship rival.

The Black Cats are thought to be one of several clubs interested in the former Leeds United forward after the 24-year-old became a free agent this summer.

The winger made 10 Championship appearances on loan at Sheffield Wednesday during the second half of this season. The Owls are keen to re-sign the Colombia international on a permanent deal with other second tier clubs said to be interested.

Sunderland Luton Town and Burnley have all been linked with a move for Poveda this summer. However, a report from our sister title The Sheffield Star states that the player is “in discussions” with former loan club Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl now wanted by another Championship club - Sheffield Wednesday News

The Star add that Poveda has been identified as a key target heading into the summer by manager Danny Rohl and Wednesday’s recruiters. “Now it seems that interest has been formalised and that outline contract talks have been had with the attacker with regard to the possibility of signing him on a permanent basis after an eye-catching loan stint last time out,” The Star wrote.

It is thought that Poveda’s good relationship with Owls boss Rohl – who signed a new deal at the club recently – could well swing the deal in favour of Wednesday amid interest from elsewhere in the Championship.

But the Black Cats have endured turbulent times of late, following a season in which they had three different managers, and will have to solve some issues this summer before looking ahead to the new campaign.

These are three players whose futures the club must solve prior to the transfer window deadline of August 30th:

Jack Clarke

Jack Clarke

Jack Clarke was absolutely electric for the Black Cats at times last term, and scored 15 goals in 40 appearances, despite the fact that he struggled in the latter half of the season, with his last goal coming on 17th February in a shock 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City, who were eventually relegated.
