Orlando Pirates recently said goodbye to one of their more loyal servants. However, his career didn’t live up to expectations.

According to transfermarkt.com, Erasmus’ market value peaked in 2016 when he was with Stade Rennais in France’s Ligue 1. World Soccer Magazine named Erasmus one of the 50 most talented young players in world football in a piece titled “The 50 most exciting teenagers on the planet” in 2007. That list included Karim Benzema, Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria, Gareth Bale and Alexandre Pato.

Erasmus joined the Buccaneers from Sundowns in September 2022 for a second tenure after feverish speculation linking him with a switch to Kaizer Chiefs. The seasoned striker has spent time in France, Portugal and the Netherlands before settling back into South African football in 2019. It’s anyone’s bet where he could end up in 2024-25 after being released by Pirates. He made only six league appearances last term. That’s 20% of the matches and now he’s a free agent. After so much promise, the twilight years of his career have been underwhelming in comparison.

Kermit has represented 11 clubs across five countries throughout his career. That’s impressive, in a way, but also indicates that he never quite settled and called one club home for an extended spell. Erasmus only collected 19 Bafana Bafana caps, collecting seven pieces of silverware at club level in South Africa, including three DStv Premiership crowns. It’s not a bad haul at all, but it’s not enough to place him alongside true greats like Hlompho Kekana.

Phakaaathi believes Cape Town City is angling for a reunion with former striker Erasmus ahead of 2024-2025. The former Rennes and Feyenoord man, however, is in favour of staying in Gauteng.
