Pundit reacts as Sheffield Wednesday eye Sory Kaba as Ike Ugbo alternative

Pundit Carlton Palmer believes Las Palmas striker Sory Kaba would be a good signing for Sheffield Wednesday.

According to journalist Darren Witcoop, Wednesday are one of a number of Championship clubs eyeing a move for Kaba, who is free to leave Las Palmas this summer.

Kaba has struggled for game time since joining the Spanish outfit from Midtjylland last summer, and he scored just two goals and provided one assist in 20 appearances in all competitions this season.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell at Cardiff City in the 2022-23 season, scoring eight goals in 17 appearances to help the Bluebirds to Championship survival.

Cardiff were keen to sign Kaba permanently last summer, and he was also linked with the likes of Watford, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City, but he instead opted to join Las Palmas.

Kaba could now be set to return to English football with Wednesday, and he has emerged on the Owls’ radar amid concerns they could be priced out of a move for Troyes striker Ike Ugbo, who scored seven goals in 19 appearances during his loan spell at the club in the second half of the season.

Carlton Palmer backs Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Sory Kaba

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer said that Kaba could be a shrewd signing for Wednesday, but he admitted it would be a blow if the Owls are unable to secure Ugbo’s return.

“It’s reported that Sheffield Wednesday are interested in former Cardiff player Sory Kaba,” Palmer said.

“Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl have already been busy in the transfer window having recruited experienced goalkeeper Ben Hamer, as well as defensive duo Max Lowe and Yan Valery.

“They signed Ike Ugbo on loan from Troyes in January and he quickly endeared himself to the Hillsborough fans.

“With the Owls’ Championship status confirmed on the final day of the season, there was immediate clamour from the fans for Ugbo to be brought back to South Yorkshire.
