However, the Lilywhites have had the last laugh by snapping up the centre-back on a permanent deal – and it won’t be long before he faces his former side in back-to-back games.

Cann (20) is a graduate of Lincoln’s academy system and has previously had loan spells at Gainsborough Trinity and Peterborough Sports.

He said: “When I got the call about this transfer, I smiled because I played with Drogheda earlier in the season but I can’t wait to get going here at Dundalk.

“I had a few weeks off after my last game for Drogheda against Shamrock Rovers at the end of May and it has helped me. I’m feeling really good and I’m in a good frame of mind so I just want to hit the ground running at Oriel Park.

“I know the league so I just need to get to know the lads here a bit more and once I do, I’ll have no problems settling in.

Cann could feature against Shamrock Rovers on Thursday night, should his international clearance come through, while after that Dundalk face Drogheda in back-to-back league and FAI Cup games.

He is the fifth addition of the transfer window so far, along with Scott McGill, Norman Garbett, Jad Hakiki and Bobby Faulkner.

It’s not all bad news for Drogheda, however, as they have completed the signing of midfielder Shane Farrell from Shelbourne.
