Anthony Gordon transfer to Liverpool ‘hands Arne Slot with same problem Jurgen Klopp had’
English winger Anthony Gordon has been heavily linked with a switch to Anfield, but an ex-player has warned that his potential arrival could cause unrest
Liverpool signing Anthony Gordon would agitate the forwards who are already a part of Arne Slot’s squad, according to Reds icon John Barnes.
England star Gordon has caught the eye of the Merseyside club, whom he allegedly supported as a child. But Barnes warns that the current wingers at the club could become frustrated should he arrive.
Were Gordon to arrive, the likes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota or even Cody Gakpo could see their game time decrease dramatically and could cause disruption in the dressing room – the last thing new boss Slot needs during his first season in charge.
Contact between Newcastle and Liverpool over Gordon was initially made in June, before the profit and sustainability regulations deadline at the end of the month when the Magpies needed to balance their books by.
Newcastle adhered to the league’s financial rules, and the desperation to sell Gordon dissipated once the deadline passed. On the other hand, Liverpool still need a top winger – perhaps someone in line to take the reins when Mo Salah departs the club.
Liverpool legend Barnes believes Gordon is a talented player but stated signing him this summer would not be wise, as he pointed to a different Englishman instead.
“Gordon under Klopp would have probably been a better signing because he’s much more dynamic in terms of going forward than Eze. Whereas Eze is much better on the ball, coming short, getting the ball. You know, he’s more technical than Gordon.
“Anthony Gordon yes he would be great but I don’t think that we’re necessarily looking for players in those positions unless players leave. So yeah, if you can get a good young English player. Yeah. Why not?”
