Leicester City transfer would come with three risks – but could be the game-changer they need

Vying with Roma to sign a player from Juventus for a fee of more than £25m – Leicester City are back in the big leagues. If City are to meet Juve’s asking price for Matias Soule, it would be their biggest signing since Wesley Fofana arrived for £30m four years ago.

There are conflicting reports coming out of Italy at the moment over whether the 21-year-old would prefer to stay in Serie A or move to the Premier League. Perhaps helping City’s cause is Caleb Okoli, his team-mate on loan at Frosinone last season, who can now sell Seagrave and Steve Cooper to the Argentinian.

An attacking midfielder is very clearly City’s number one priority now that Dewsbury-Hall is not around. Having a player who can tread the line between creator and goalscorer and can connect with the wingers and striker could be the difference between survival and relegation. Even five goals and five assists would make a huge impact.

Of the players linked to City, Juventus’ Matias Soule looks very impressive. He led some Serie A for key passes last season, despite being just 21, despite limited first-team experience, and despite playing for a relegated side in Frosinone. He looks to have a very high ceiling.

He is probably the best of the players City have been linked to, but the only doubt would be whether he is comfortable to play in a central position. He spent a lot of last season on the right wing, cutting onto his left. Even when played more centrally, he was still slightly off to the right. City need somebody to complement Abdul Fatawu, not get in his way.

The signing of Caleb Okoli does strengthen the centre-back options, especially if Cooper does implement a back three. With Wilfred Ndidi extending his contract, a player similar to Harry Winks as a deep-lying playmaker must be the priority.

Going on the potential that Cooper plays a 3-4-3, the midfield is clearly lacking the numbers to compete in the Premier League. Callum O’Hare is a player I’d like to see signed at the King Power Stadium and recently linked Amir Richardson can play both roles.

Benfica’s Florentino Luis would be the dream signing as a player with high-quality from Europe. However, he will come at a cost and it feels like the club have finally learnt from their mistakes and are capitalising on the free agent market.
