Seamus Coleman honest interview on Everton new stadium, European return and contract dilemma
Everton legend and club captain Seamus Coleman sits down with Blues correspondent Joe Thomas during an emotional return to Ireland
Seamus Coleman does not know the point at which he became more than a player at Everton. He is aware he occupies a unique position, that he is seen as a bridge between the dressing room and the stands. But as five years on Merseyside turned to 10, and now 15, he cannot pinpoint when, or why, a relationship that has helped to protect Everton turned into something so rare and so special in the modern game.
He is too humble to consider it has anything to do with his ability on the pitch. “It is not like I am Leighton Baines and I am getting 20 assists a season”, he said in a moment of reflection in the lobby of the hotel used by Everton , adding: “It’s not like I’ve been the most talented player to put an Everton jersey on, I just worked really hard, respected my managers, respected the Everton badge, and in return I think Evertonians respect that and, you know, they just want to see people give their all.
