Charlton Athletic and Barnsley rivals ‘closing in’ on Premier League coup ahead of season openers
Charlton Athletic will kick off their League One campaign with a trip to Wigan Athletic on August 10 and the Latics could field a former Premier League star following his release from London club Fulham.
The Addicks will be hoping for a strong start to the third tier campaign in a bid to challenge at the other end of the table during the 2024/25 season. The Latics failed to get the better of Charlton Athletic last season, drawing at The Valley in April having been beaten by the visitors last October.
Days after the season opener, both sides will be in Carabao Cup action with Charlton facing Birmingham City and Wigan hosting Barnsley.
for the start of the campaign, as too has Shaun Maloney at Wigan. The League One rivals have already brought in Will Aimson from Exeter City and Dion Rankine from Chelsea on permanent deals, as well as loanees Calvin Ramsay and Michael Olakigbe from Liverpool and Brentford.
The Latics are now set to complete another piece of head-turning business ahead of the season opener against Charlton Athletic. According to Wigan Today, the club is ‘closing in on the capture’ of recently released Fulham youngster Tyrese Francois.
Francois made 11 first team appearances for the Cottagers, including two brief Premier League outings during the 2021/22 season. The midfielder featured at home against Newcastle United and at Molineux when facing Wolves that season.
Speaking about the player in January, Fulham head coach Marco Silva admitted that he needed more playing time and experience before challenging for a regular space in the first team. Francois featured in the FA Cup against Rotherham and the Carabao Cup against Tottenham Hotspur this season, as well as finding himself an unused substitute in five Premier League matches.
