Rotherham United’s next pre-season game sees them travel to Derbyshire to take on Alfreton Town at the Impact Stadium.
The Reds were formed in 1959 after Alfreton Miners Welfare and Alfreton United merged and were admitted in to the Central Alliance North Division One. Two year later they had done well enough to join the Midland Counties League.
After going close a number of times Alfreton finally won the Midland League at the end of the 1969/70 season and won it twice more and more success was theirs after the merger of the Midland and Yorkshire League and they were champions of the Northern Counties East League in 1986/7 and moved up to the newly formed First Division of the Northern Premier League.

1995/6 saw the Reds promoted to the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League after finishing runners-up but after a couple of back-to-back relegations Alfreton found themselves starting the 1999/2000 in the Northern Counties (East) League.
Former Miller Chris Wilder took over the Reds as manager in 2001 and he led them to the Northern Counties (East) League Premier Division championship, League Cup, President’s Cup and Derbyshire Senior Cup winners. Chris left in 2002 and Dave Lloyd took over and helped them to another promotion. Two years later the team were promoted to the Conference North Division. Gary Mills became manager in 2005 leaving after just twenty months when Marcus Ebdon took over as player manager and led the Red to fourteenth place in the division before leaving at the end of the season.
Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans told the Official Site that it had been a busy couple of days with the trip on Friday evening to Stamford and the game yesterday, back in Lincolnshire at Spalding.
Both games the Millers have had to come back from going behind with Friday night’s game being a four-two win and yesterday’s a one-all draw.
