High hopes remain for Newcastle midfielder who spent much of last season out with recurring hamstring and Achilles injuries.
‘I want to make that clear to all our supporters’… Eddie Howe sends Anthony Gordon message amid Liverpool interest
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has hailed one ‘crucial’ star and has questioned why he would allow him to leave this summer.
This summer has been a quiet one for Newcastle United with the club signing Lewis Hall, Lloyd Kelly and goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest.
Departures have been important in recent weeks for the club to be able to keep up with PSR issues with Newcastle selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.
However, for a brief moment the future of one key star in Anthony Gordon was up in the air, with Liverpool showing interest in the former Everton winger.
There was interest from Liverpool but Howe is understood to have told Newcastle’s hierarchy about getting Gordon on a new and improved contract.
Speaking to The Metro, Howe was asked about the future of Gordon and was unequivocal in his response.
“I’d welcome Anthony back with three arms if I had them. He’s an integral part of what we’re doing,” Howe said.
“We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle and I want to make that clear to all our supporters.
“Anthony needs a bit of a break but by the time he comes back, he’ll be ready to go. He’s such an important player for us. We didn’t want to lose anybody.
“Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions but in those last few weeks it was very, very difficult.”
This has been a rather unsettling summer for the Magpies with manager Eddie Howe being of interest to England to replace Gareth Southgate this summer, with the Newcastle boss understood to be interested in the top job.
There has been interest in Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes from multiple top clubs with the Magpies making key changes behind the scenes.
Chelsea made an enquiry for Isak but were told, in no uncertain terms, the Swedish striker was not for sale at any price.
