Tottenham not desperate for cash after Dele Alli agreement reached with Everton

Tottenham reaching a new agreement with Everton over any potential future appearances for the Toffees was an act of goodwill as Spurs are not desperate for cash, Dan Plumley has said.

The attacking midfielder is technically a free agent after his contract with Everton ran out but he is training with the club in a bid to impress during pre-season and potentially earn a new deal.

Previously, Everton would have had to pay Spurs an extra £10million if Alli racked up 20 appearances for the club before what would have been the end of his Tottenham contract.

Football London reported (14 July) that if Alli were to pen new terms with Everton there would be no immediate cash due to Spurs but future payments could be made if certain objectives are met, while a sell-on clause would be inserted.

Reacting to the news in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, football finance expert Plumley said: “It seems to be that way (goodwill from Tottenham).

“Nobody is going to turn down money if you can have it but Spurs are not desperate for that bit of cash that would have been linked to that agreemen

“It was pretty clear that he’s not going to be in the plans for Spurs anytime soon under what they were trying to do, I think sometimes you just kind of end up at the right decision all around as a basis of how these things have played out and this one feels a bit like that from a Spurs perspective.”

The now 28-year-old, once one of England’s top talents, has opened up on his struggles with mental health and childhood trauma.

Essentially, Spurs are making the right decision when it comes to Alli and if, as everyone hopes, he can get back to levels he once was at they seem to be pretty well incentivised anyway.

It was the right decision to make for all parties. Now everyone can just hope that Alli gets back playing and lighting up Premier League grounds around the country.
