With the backing of Steve Gibson, Michael Carrick has made several smart signings for Middlesbrough this summer.
Luke Ayling, Aidan Morris, and Delano Burgzorg should all add some quality depth to Boro’s first-team squad.
However, the incomings at the Riverside Stadium are not expected to stop with that trio.
Boro News understands Middlesbrough’s striker plans for the remainder of 2024 could see them dip into the loan market.
Elsewhere, Boro News believes that Middlesbrough are looking at the foreign market to strengthen on the left wing.
Middlesbrough should sign Todd Cantwell from Rangers
Cantwell joined Rangers from Norwich City in January 2023 but is now likely to leave the Ibrox Stadium in the current window.
This comes after Gers’ boss Philippe Clement confirmed on Wednesday evening that Cantwell has handed in a transfer request
The 26-year-old has made 64 appearances for the Scottish giants, scoring 14 and assisting 12 in said matches.
At present, Middlesrough’s only quality left-wing option is new signing Burgzorg, who scored his first-ever goal for Boro last week.
The Dutchman is expected to face competition from Riley McGree on that flank.
The Australian is a natural central midfielder but will likely have to be played out of position due to Middlesbrough’s lack of depth in that area.
However, should Cantwell sign, it would give Carrick another versatile option to pick from in his front line.
Cantwell, like McGree, is a natural midfielder and was used largely as a number 10 by Rangers last term.
But he has played the majority of his senior games on the left, meaning he can rival McGree and Burgzorg in that area.
The Englishman’s signing would also open the door to McGree playing as a 10 or Burgzorg being used as a centre-forward, like he was at Huddersfield Town in the previous campaign.
