Wigan sign Leicester winger Thomas on loan

Wigan Athletic have signed winger Silko Thomas on a season-long loan from Premier League side Leicester City.

London-born Thomas began his career in the Chelsea youth set-up before moving to the Foxes last summer.

The 20-year-old scored five times and provided four assists in 16 appearances for Leicester’s under-21s in the Premier League 2 last season.

“It was easy for me to come here knowing the manager [Shaun Maloney] has wanted me for over 18 months,” Thomas told Wigan’s club website, external.

Thomas is Wigan’s eighth summer signing and could feature against Blackburn in pre-season on Saturday.

The 20-year-old joined City in September 2023 after spending time with Chelsea’s academy and was a regular for the Club’s Under-21s last term, featuring on 19 occasions in all competitions, scoring six goals.

His progress saw him named in the matchday squads for the First Team in the fourth and fifth round of Emirates FA Cup victories over Birmingham City and AFC Bournemouth respectively.

That development will now continue with the Latics as they look to build on their 12th place finish in Sky Bet League One last season.

After his move to Wigan was confirmed, Hugill took to Instagram with a message. He wrote: “Very excited to be here for the season. Can’t wait to get started!”

Shea Lacey commented: “Good luck brother”, followed by a heart emoji.

Hugill’s fellow striker Ethan Wheatley also sent a message, writing: “Let’s go!”

Gabriele Biancheri added: “Good luck bro”, along with a praising emoji just days after he scored a brace vs Chester.

Habeeb Ogunneye and Toby Collyer both simply commented heart emojis, while Jack Fletcher and James Nolan added clapping emojis.
