Republic of Ireland midfielder Jayson Molumby punched an opponent in today’s pre-season friendly between West Brom and Mallorca.
The Waterford man was provoked by an opponent and reacted by striking his face before grappling him in a headlock while falling to the ground.
Teammates from both sides rushed towards the fight to de-escalate the tension.
Fans online have suggested that Molumby’s frustrations bubbled over after the same Mallorca player committed repeated poor challenges on him and his West Brom teammates.
West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby PUNCHED an opponent after seeing red in a friendly match against RCD Mallorca.
In a clip which quickly went viral, the Republic of Ireland international, 24, was seen remonstrating with Mallorca player Samu Costa after being on the receiving end of a poor tackle during Saturday afternoon’s match, which was played behind closed doors.
After exchanging words, Costa and Molumby went head to head before the Mallorca player appeared to raise an arm. Molumby responded by punching Costa and then grappling with his opponent before stunned team-mates piled in.The incident occurred in the 40th minute and the referee chose to end the first half early. Unsurprisingly, Molumby did not feature in the second half of the match.
Although the game was played behind closed doors at the Baggies’ training base, the clip was seen by thousands due to a Spanish broadcast outlet.
West Brom went on to lose the match 1-0 with David Lopez plundering the winner midway through the second-half.
Molumby joined the Baggies on loan from Brighton back in the summer of 2021 before making the move permanent 12 months later. The all-action central midfielder has gone on to make over 100 appearances for West Brom, who will be among the favourites for promotion in the Championship this coming season.
