Exeter City beaten by Bristol City in pre-season friendly
Grecians beaten 2-1 by Championship side
Exeter City suffered a first defeat of pre-season as they were beaten 2-1 away to Championship side Bristol City. Two second-half goals from Harry Cornick put the Robins ahead before Josh Magennis’ late penalty pulled one back for the Grecians.
But despite the defeat, City manager Gary Caldwell was pleased with what his side could take from their friendly. It was more minutes in the tank, and lessons will be learnt in terms of what is needed ahead of the start of the season.
“It was another brilliant game for us in terms of the quality of opposition, the quality of the pitch, and it was a really good test for us,” he said.
“I thought in the first half we were excellent, we controlled the game by and large, gave a poor chance away at a corner but I thought we were in control. We created moments where the final pass wasn’t quite there but if it had been we were in.
“First half I was really happy, second half, we gave away two bad goals. Then the younger lads came on and I thought our spirit was brilliant. We got back in the game, created a good chance, pushed them right to the end. It was a brilliant exercise for pre-season, lots to take from how we want to perform in and out of possession but certain things we need to work on.”
Vincent Harper made his first appearance of the summer for Caldwell’s side, while Jack McMillan showed his versatility by starting in the central midfield, as City continued their build-up to the start of the action proper just a fortnight away.
